[ARCHIVED] Serial Burglar Targeted Churches, Schools in Berks and Lancaster Counties

Zachary A. May

A man charged with breaking into numerous churches and elementary schools in Berks County has also been charged with targeting a church in Denver.

East Cocalico Township police charged Zachary A. May on Tuesday with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft for a July 10 break-in at St. John’s United Church of Christ at 659 S. 4th Street.

May, 30, is at Berks County Prison charged with 11 other burglaries. The investigation is ongoing into how many locations May burglarized; additional charges could be filed in both counties.

May has admitted to police to many of the crimes.

He took about $30 cash from the Denver church, but caused more than $4,600 in damages when he used a pry bar and screwdriver to open multiple doors and cabinets, according to East Cocalico Township Detective Keith Neff.

The church also serves as Cocalico Daycare Center.
