Residents are warned of a scam involving a caller claiming to be with the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office while demanding payment.
Local officials are aware of at least one case and believe other people could be targeted.
The caller identified himself as Lieutenant Salas (there is no such person in the Sheriff’s office) and told the target they missed a court appointment.
The caller then told the target they ignored two certified letters about the matter.
The caller demanded payment for two “citations,” for a total of $700 in bitcoin. The target paid the sum.
The incident is under investigation.
If you received or receive such a call, contact the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office at 717-299-8200 or your local police department. Do not provide information or payment.
The caller was aware of the target’s history because there was mention of a prior criminal offense.
