A Lancaster man will serve up to 34 years in prison for sexual abuse of a pre-teenager 10 years ago at a city apartment.
Lancaster County Judge Donald Totaro sentenced 50-year-old Teddy Bernard to 10¾ to 34 years in prison regarding an October conviction on rape of a child and six other felonies.
When Judge Totaro asked if Bernard had anything to say before he ordered sentence, Bernard declined to speak.
The victim, who was 8 at the time of the abuse, and her mother spoke at the sentencing hearing about the impact of the abuse at a Union Street apartment during 2010.
Assistant District Attorney Karen Mansfield presented evidence at trial that Bernard was an acquaintance of the girl’s mother when the abuse happened.
ADA Mansfield asked Judge Totaro to consider the victim’s trauma and order consecutive sentences for the different criminal acts.
Judge Totaro ordered consecutive sentences on charges of rape, corruption of a minor, and indecent exposure.
Lancaster city police started an investigation in late 2018 upon receiving information from Children & Youth Services.
City police Detective Ryan Hockley filed charges.
